Chapter 18

With a smile on my face, I made my way over to the cottage. My family had almost finished with Grace’s room and Bernie was cleaning the house, making sure it was up to his standards. Because, as he put it, ‘no child of his would live in unsanitary conditions.’ The funny thing was, Bernie wasn’t just referring to Grace, he was also meaning Aiden. I wasn’t sure what Bernie would’ve done if he had seen our place back in Thailand. We certainly hadn’t kept it up to his standards.

I slowly opened the front door of the cottage and was greeted by one very happy best friend in the arms of my extremely relieved brother.

“All’s good I take it?” I asked.

Chelsea snuggled in against Lucas’s chest. “Very. But...” She pulled away from him. “You’re still not off the hook.”

I sighed. “Your BF status doesn’t include knowing the private details of anyone you want. Otherwise, that same status might just pass on to Lucas... You know, because he’s my brother and all.”

She pulled a funny face at me, her nose squishing up in the process. “That won’t work because he already knows everything about me.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Everything?”

Her thoughts quickly went to her every embarrassing moment from when she was a child. Chelsea tried to shake her thoughts away; when it didn’t work, she put her fingers against her temple and started chanting ‘puppies, puppies, puppies, puppies’ over and over again.

Lucas and I laughed.

She lowered her hands. “That is so not funny.”

“But it does make you that much cuter in his eyes,” I said, letting one little secret out.

Chelsea looked up at Lucas with a hopeful expression.

“You’re forgetting that I’ve heard the worst in people. Those things are nothing, really.”

“They’re embarrassing.” She rested her forehead against his chest to avoid having to look him in the eye.

“So, I’ll make you think about puppies again?” I asked, trying to move on and save Chelsea from any further embarrassment, only it brought up another issue.

“How the hell am I supposed to face everyone again, knowing they can hear every damned thought I have?” she asked.

“The same way I had to,” I replied. “You just have to keep reminding yourself that they’ve been listening to you since the moment they met you—dumb assed thoughts and all. And they still chose to be friends with you then, and nothing has changed.” When she didn’t answer I said, “Or, I could just delete your memory and you can go on thinking that it’s only me who can hear your dumb-assed thoughts.” I grinned.

Chelsea considered what I offered for a moment before saying, “No. I want them to know that I know they are prying into my inner most secrets. But...” She looked up at Lucas. “No more keeping things from me. If you know everything about me, I deserve the same.”

He nodded. “Got it.”

She turned to me. “And I’m going to hold you accountable to him.”

I looked at Lucas who gave me a nod of approval.
